MINDSET (2 hrs)

According to one of the recent studies, by the time we are 18 years old, 25,000 hours of thought programming would have gone into our heads, whether at school, at home, or from parents, friends, or relatives; do-this, don’t-do-this, this-is-right, this-is-wrong, you-should-be-like-this, you-should-not-be- like-this, if-you-qualify-in-IIT-JEE-its-success-else-you-are-a-failure, if-I-get-good-score-in-exam-then-I- am-intelligent-else-I-am-not, if-you-work-in-US-you-are-great-else-you-are-not, don’t-work-in-a- company-for-more-than-2-or-3-years, groom-should-have-a-Greencard-in-US, I’d-like-to-have-my-kid- in-US-so-he-can-be-a-US-citizen etc.
These ‘programs’ also give rise to our beliefs. Even though at the conscious level we don’t notice these beliefs they have a tremendous effect on the choices we make, the kind of decisions we abide by, the kind of relationships we get in to, or in general what kind of person we develop to be. And it is these beliefs that give rise to our mindset. In this talk I will be sharing some of the key insights gleaned from the ground-breaking research on mindsets, done by Stanford psychologist Carol S Dweck. Good news is we have the power to change our beliefs and our mindset, for the better, and some of the techniques to do so will be discussed as a part of this presentation.

EFFECT OF THOUGHTS ON HEALTH (1.5 hrs)

The latest research in the field of medicine has uncovered some startling facts about how our thoughts affect our health with conclusive evidence. Do you know that persistent negative thinking is a precursor to cancer? Do you know that positive thinking and deep breathing can strengthen your Vagal-Nerve? Do you know how your mind, brain, and immune systems work together to either relieve you of stress or to cause more of it? Do you know how too much of stress leads to heart disease? All these and much more is discussed as a part of this presentation which will help gain an excellent insight into why the practice of spirituality and meditation is good for physical, mental & emotional health

PREVENTING CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (1 hr)

With each passing decade and the corresponding changes in the lifestyle of people, the incidence of heart disease at younger age is increasing. The average age of a person who got heart attack in 1960s was around 60 years. In late 1990s it reduced to 30 years. By 2010 that age is expected to come to 18. Already we are seeing youngsters as young as 19 suffering from heart attacks. In this presentation we will look at the reasons for heart attack; under what circumstances it develops and how our eating and living patterns contribute to its development, and most importantly, what can we do to prevent its occurrence.

REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES (RSI) (1.5 hrs)

We are said to be in the Information Technology Age with computers being used in almost all walks of life for accomplishing various tasks: whether it’s weather forecasting or booking railway tickets, whether it’s a medical scan or keeping track of our company’s accounts, whether its surfing internet or printing bills at local grocery store, we all either indirectly or directly use computers. With these new machines have come new set of diseases too. Based on years of research, scientists have found that the stresses and strains that are caused by sitting and using a computer for many hours a day can lead to some of the chronic and sometimes life-affecting diseases like Spondylosis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Slip disc etc. World over billions of dollars are spent on medical expenses by those working with computers due to various illnesses related to usage of computers.
In this presentation we will explore the various causes of ‘Repetitive Strain Injuries’ or popularly known as RSIs. We will also discuss in detail how should our workplace be designed so that we can avoid these RSIs in first place. A set of physical exercises that help strengthen various parts of the body to withstand the stress caused by a day’s long work will also be presented.

PLACEBO EFFECT (1.5 hrs)

‘Placebo’ means in Latin ‘to please’. The placebo effect deals with the positive effects caused by ‘the intention ‘or desire’ to get well with or without drugs. Many examples of how our thoughts affect our healing and how a few positive re-enforcing statements by a doctor can profoundly influence a patient’s recovery are discussed in this presentation. It also discusses ways and means by which doctors can help their patients recover faster.
